Let parents decide over grammar schools

SIR - The Conservative Party's problem with grammar schools (report, May 31) has a simple remedy. Labour's legislative mechanism of petition and ballot to get rid of remaining grammars has only to be balanced by an identical provision for parents to secure a grammar school where one does not exist.

This would leave the decision to parents, appeal to those who favour balance and fair play, and might even be a vote winner.
